With the election upon us, it’s not infrequent to see updates from our friends via social media with lists of things they’d prefer not to hear about anymore.
I.e. “Things I’d like to never hear about again: Gorillas, Donald Trump and Parenting Styles.”
However, I’ve now seen some posts around the web tossing the Brock Turner case into the “Things I Don’t Ever Want to See On My Timeline Again.”
While endless political rants from either side can become a bit of a nuisance, Brock Turner’s name is one I do not mind seeing over and over again in my timeline. In fact, it’s one that I welcome.
Brock Turner’s Name Can Light Up My Timeline.
Why?
Because his name represents the injustice we have all learned and heard about by now. Because Brock Turner’s name is something we have to arm ourselves with; whether with words towards him, words protesting the horrendous acts he was convicted of, words that prove rape culture is alive and thriving, words outraged by his ridiculous sentence, and most of all, the powerful words being written to remind us all what he did to an innocent 23-year-old woman.
His name is our ammunition.

Each time Brock Turner’s name passes through my timeline, I am led to an article, many written by some of my own incredibly strong friends whom have been sexually assaulted themselves.
These voices are speaking up for the voice that was silenced- the voice that was clearly not heard by a judge who sentenced Brock Turner to 6 months in jail- NOT PRISON– JAIL. These voices, collectively, paint a vibrant canvas. They serve as a powerful reminder that while “RAPE IS WRONG” is something we all know, it appears our justice system does not always send that same message.
A judge may have power over a jail sentence, but we have power with our words. We have power with numbers and we have power within each of us to scream this name as many times as we like and as loud as we like to try our damn best to bring some semblance of justice to this woman. We may not be able to extend a sentence, or bring the real justice this woman deserves, but we have the power to raise our voices, and if that means Brock Turner’s name in my timeline five thousand times today, so be it.

Seeing as justice was clearly not served, their voices, OUR VOICES, are the ones that will overshadow his joke of a jail sentence. These articles with “Brock Turner” as the headline, they are the voices trying with all their might to do what a judge did not; ferociously standing behind this woman (and ALL victims of sexual assault) screaming at the top of our lungs: WE HEAR YOU. WE WILL FIGHT FOR YOU.
So, I welcome Brock Turner’s name in my timeline. I welcome every article from every angle, because seeing as legal justice was not served to this victim, our collective voices will have to bring as much justice and awareness as we can.
AND THEY WILL:
Alison Tedford from Sparkly Shoes & Sweatdrops: 20 Minutes of Action
Darla Halyk from New World Mom: Your Honor, (There Is No Honor In Your Sentence) You Just Minimalized Rape
Kristen Mae from Abandoning Pretense: We With the Pitchforks
Audrey Hayworth from Sass Mouth: This is What “20 Minutes of Action Looks Like”
So, share these posts- burn Brock Turner’s name into the brain of every person around the globe.
On our own, we are one, but together we can move mountains.
…there are so many more amazing articles out there that I’ve read, and I’m sure have yet to read- please feel free to post any others that you’ve come across in the comments section on Facebook.

Thank you for standing with us Ashley, you’re an incredible woman. Love to you! ❤️
YES! all of this! I want everyone to read about this story, since it is part of a massively larger issue!
Aaron Persky (the judge) has given Brock a social media life sentence, a sentence far greater than the 6 months he handed out and far greater than the justice system recommended 14 years. Brock Turner’s name and face will forever be synonymous with rape. I hope by our standing up for the victim of this injustice, it can give her some peace, if only to know she does not stand alone.
My mom is a survivor and I managed to escape an assault but not before the man had already put his hands on my 12 year old body. It’s been 16 years and I will never forget that experience. I believe that the more we all rise together and put our feet down and yell from the rooftops that this is unacceptable and we will not stand by and do nothing the more people will take notice. Rape is rape and it is never ok! We are raising our voices to be heard, together we are strong and together we will work to end rape culture. For us. For our siblings. For our parents. For our friends. For our children.
I just finished reading this one, and it really resonated with me. SO MANY THINGS on this list have happened to me, and now I’m fighting back. NO MORE BULLSHIT.

Thank you for writing this. I know this has sort of run it’s course now because it’s been such a horrible week but I welcome this kind of stuff in my newsfeed, too. It’s important to remember…because if this has touched you, you don’t forget.
Very, very well written my friend.
