I have a really great habit of getting a deposit into my bank account and having this surge of invincibility. I had a nice little payout when I left my job and decided that I would treat myself to a few items. Back in the day when I had first signed up for a checking account and they gave me that dreadful ‘check register’ to keep track of all my dimes, I thought. ‘what a joke!’, I know how much money I spend, plus, have access to online banking to keep track…no need!
Well, years later, let me tell ya–that check register would have been a genius idea for me to follow through with. Every morning I wake up, I am quickly reminded of all my online purchases I made the day before. Sometimes they are necessary (i.e. envelopes for our business) and sometimes they are NOT so necessary (i.e. an identical wallet to the one i already have because it was ON SALE (!!!)) Yeah, not so great.
This morning I woke up and found that my account was negative. Wow! Rather than being dismayed, I thought to myself, ‘Good for you Ashley, this is your first overdraft of the year!’ Immediately I knew my thinking was ass backwards.
While I realize that online shopping has some serious perks, I also believe that so does actually going out and purchasing your crap in person. I feel I am a hell of a lot more responsible when I actually have to tote all my crap through Target or the shopping mall with me and back to my car. It sort of gives you some accountability. When five days back-to-back you receive your thirty third and third fourth pair of flip flops, a birchbox, a new wallet that you already own in a different color, Drew Barrymore AND Cameron Diaz’s new books…well, it sort of starts to hit you. However, not nearly as fast as the balance in your checking account hits ya.
I think it may be time to give my Paypal account a little break. Poor guy has been workin’ on overdrive. Not only that, but clearly Paypal and my checking account are not agreeing right now. Paypal stole $126.00 from my checking account when he most certainly wasn’t expecting it!
